The neighborhood of St. Matthews was once the suburb of St. Matthews prior to the annexation of the area into the city of Louisville in 2003. This neighborhood is home to Louisville's largest shopping district on Shelbyville Road, plenty of movie theatres, and of course single-family homes that were once part of suburbia.
The neighborhood started out as a settlement in 1779 when Colonel John Floyd purchased 2,000 acres. The land transitioned into a rural neighborhood as the land was gifted to soldiers for their service during the French and Indian War and it remained that way until a shopping center was built in the 1920s. The neighborhood saw exponential growth during the flood of 1937 as residents moved to higher ground.

The majority of St. Matthews restaurants are large chains, but there are a few smaller eateries that offer interesting and popular dishes. While the area is not made popular for a thriving nightlife scene, there are a couple of bars that are popular with residents including Dutch's Tavern, Brendan's, and the Bluegrass Brewing Company.
St. Matthews is the place to go shopping in Louisville, it is home to the two largest malls in the city:
The Mall St. Matthews: 1.1 million square feet with over 130 stores including Aeropostale, Ann Taylor, Loft, Arhaus, Aveda, Bebe, Brooks Brothers, Pottery Barn, and more. The Mall St. Matthews is located at 5000 Shelbyville Road.
Oxmoor Mall: Just down the road from the Mall St. Matthews at 7900 Shelbyville Road. This smaller mall is home to over 50 stores and restaurants including American Eagle Outfitters, Eddie Bauer, Gymboree, Old Navy, Pottery Barn Kids, and more.
